In 2021 I did my internship at IDEAL&CO. IDEAL&CO develops sustainable innovations, they are specialized in circular design. They can determine how circular a product is, discover where profit or growth opportunities lie, and they are concerned with redesigning a product for the circular economy.
During my internship I developed a circular laptopbag that will be distinctive next to all other laptop bags on the market, mainly in the field of circularity & sustainability.
Circular Laptopbag
By making and testing many sketches and models, major steps can be taken quickly in a design process. The laptop bag is easy to repair when a part is broken or worn, the fabric can be replaced when the user needs a new look for the bag and the size of the bag can be easily adjusted after purchasing a new size laptop. The laptop bag has fewer parts than the current laptop bags. In addition, the parts are easy to disassemble in case it is decided to throw away parts of the bag after malfunction or damage.

Laptop bags end up in the waste for three main reasons. First of all laptop bags are designed in such a way that you have to throw them away if it breaks or is worn out. Second, the user bought a new laptop (with different dimensions) that does not fit well in the bag. And finally, many laptop bags are also a fashion item, and are therefore discarded prematurely. The circular laptop bag is designed in such a way that users can continue to use the bag in all these cases.

Models
The starting point was to design the bag in such a way that broken or worn parts are easy to replace. So easy that no tools are needed. Parts that are worn or broken can be replaced and recycled. If the user wants to replace a part, the sides can easily be unscrewed, after which all parts are separated from each other.
The second principle was to make the bag adaptable. Both in appearance and dimensions. That way most parts of the bag can remain in use, and you only adjust what is necessary. An additional advantage of an adjustable design is that you can also choose whether you want a lot or little storage space in your bag, and how the inside of the bag is arranged.
The design is also interesting from a commercial point of view: a design that can be assembled faster is cheaper to produce. In addition, this bag offers the possibility to retain customers by selling products that allow users to repair and renew their bag. The value of the bag is retained, which means that this model is also cheaper for the user than purchasing a new bag.
During this internship, I have learned a lot about the circular economy and circular strategies that come with it. Next to that I also worked at different projects during my internship at IDEAL&CO, where I learned a lot about editing html, css and javascript code in Bluefish which I used with different projects during the internship at IDEAL&CO.
