In 2020 I worked on a project for care institution 'Ipse de Bruggen'. The demand of 'Ipse de Bruggen' is whether it is possible to examine whether sleeping products can be designed with regard to the target group; mentally challenged people. Around 80% of those people have a sleeping disorder.
SleepyBuddy's
We started doing research to the target audience, what their needs are and what the problem exactly is. After we had a good vision on the problem and the needs, we started sketching and doing research on different kind of products. Together with the client we decided to pursue the idea of a product people can take into bed to sleep with (the SleepyBuddy). The product makes sounds, vibrations, is heating up (and cooling down) and is showing a display which will comfort the user and comunicates when to wake up and not wake up.

We also created a User Interface for the health care workers so they can instal the different types of functions fitting with the user. They can instal the time when the SleepyBuddy is creating a ideal situation to sleep and to wake up again (with sounds/vibrations/vision/heating). The product is used for mentally challenged people who have strugles communicating, they need more incentives for understanding. During the night the SleepyBuddy will have the eyes closed, when it is time to wake up the eyes will open up as well. There is also a patch on the belly of the product which is lighting up when it is time to wake up.
Different types of cases on the SleepyBuddy's

There are multiple cases the user can chose from. The cases are easy to put in the laundry as well. Underneeth the outside case there is a soft type of foam (black housing in the exploded view photo) which makes the product soft to cuddle. In the middel there is a little pack with all the technical components. The product is the best possible product for mentally challenged people who have a sleeping disorder. It helps the user get comfort if they wake up in the middle of the night and it helps them get relaxed and fall asleep on the right time.
